Welling Model Club Show - results and photos

Last weekend I was taking part in a club show held by lovely guys from Welling Model Club. As always show was really friendly and the day was a pure pleasure: right mixture of meeting with friends, friendly competition and a bit of shopping.

I was lucky enough to bring home golden medal for all pieces I entered. Sadly only 3, but lately my hobby time is a bit more limited...

Photos from the show will be slowly appearing on my photobucket here. It's gonna take me a while to postprocess all of them, so please be patient with me. As always not the greatest quality, but I don't feel like taking my tripod to a show, so I have to do best with what I have.

Euromilitaire is upon us!

and I'm burried in nappies... instead of paints.

And with less than a month left, I'm affraid I won't be bringing too much to the competition. So far I have only  Leon, and Capt'n Sapo, two busts finished at the beginning of this year.

I'm hoping I'll be able to finish something else, but it all depends on how much sleep and free time I'll be able to  get these next few weeks. So far the most advanced is Old Gnome bust (from War Griffon Miniatures). At this point basically only the flesh needs to be finished, rest is more or less ready.

As always I'm struggling with the skintones, that's why I tend to leave it for the end. It's a real pity, as the face is the most important part of every miniature, bust especially. And if I won't do it good enough, the whole paintjob will be, well, wasted. So finger crossed I won't mess it up this time.
For the first time I'm trying to do directional light, shining on his left shoulder, but I'm not sure if I'll be able to pull it off. We'll see how it looks with the face ready. Hopefully it will work.

And if I'm really lucky, and wil be able to get into 'the Zone', I might even paint something else, something small and simple. If I'm lucky...

Next stop - Hussar!

With EuroMilitaire behind me (photos will be sorted out tomorrow), I'm already thinking where to go next. And it looks like the next stop will be Warsaw, and 4th edition of painting competition called Hussar. Well it was called Slayer of Demons at the very beginning, but even if the name changed, the people behind the event are the same, so I just count it as one event.

It's gonna be my second time, as I was there in 2011. One of my entries did pretty well back then, so I'm really hoping I won't embarrass myself this time... Which may proove difficult, as the competition there is really fierce. As far as I know all the top Polish painters are expected to be there (maybe the group is not massive, but very very talented and skilled) plus some from abroad, so we can expect many excellent entries, and as I said, tough battle for trophies.

The show is on 19th of October 2013, as part of the “Weekend with fantasy” held in the Community Centre Rakowiec – 8 Wiślicka St., Warsaw, Poland.
Here you can find all the necessary informations about the competition itself, categories, rules, and planned attractions (i.e. workshop with Karol Rudyk, speedpainting comp). And of course galleries and reports from previous years.
So if you have a free weekend, and would like to try something new, don't be affraid and just give it go:D

And there is one more massive attraction.... the after party. And not just some after party, but a party held in a little cafe in the same building, the cafe that still keeps the feel of the 80's in Poland... A true treat for the connoisseur;] As I'm old enough to remember that time (sadly), I just felt there like a child again.

As for me, I need to start planning my entries, and I need to do it really fast;] Less than a month left...

Hendon Model Show 19/05/2013 very brief report

Below you can find few photos I managed to take during the 'Hendon Model Show 2013'. The show took place in Royal Air Force Museum in London on 19th of May.
Sadly there are no photos from the museum itself, or clubs displays, placed between the exhibits, because the lighting conditions were way too poor for the camera. But the museum is pretty impressive and for free, so if you have no idea what to do with a rainy Sunday, and you're around, it's a place worth seeing.

The show itself was rathe small and local, mostly focused on airplanes and military vehicles. What closest to my heart, figures, was gathered in one class: 'Figures: any figure any scale'. As the result we had more than 30 entries, from small 28mm fantasy miniatures, through busts and bigger scale minis to big dinosaurs. But well like I said, figures weren't the main focus there.
But with the lovely kits I bought/won during that day, next year I guess I'll be entering something in other categories as well;]

Some of the results:
Conrad Mynett - first place in Figures with Okie
John Keys - runner up in Space & Sci-Fi  with Newark
Marta Slusarska - runner up in Figures with Viking Chief

Best of show (category scratchbuild)

Welling Model Club Show 2013

Yesterday I visited really nice show. It was held in Welling (London) and was organized by Welling Model Club for the 39th time (next year is big 40!!).
It was a  nice day, even weather was merciful and it was warm and sunny. It is always a pleasure to meet fellow modellers and painters, talk about the hobby, exchange experience and buy a new mini or two.

The competition itself was really friendly and well organised (some of the judges are judging also at EuroMilitaire). I managed to take photos of some of the entries, but because I forgot to take my camera, and was forced to use my mobile... most of the photos is rather crappy and doesn't do the justice to the paintjob, sorry guys. But yesterday i had rather hectic morning, and I'm happy I didn't forget my entries...

I must say I'm glad I didn't, as I managed to win some medals there.
I took 3 miniatures to the show, and two of them placed really nice.
Urmuth Scars of War was awarded with gold in the Fantasy/sf category, and The Grinder with bronze in Bust category.
Poor Yoda the Bloob got nothing... but I received some nice feedback and might tweak him a bit before Salute to give him fighting chance.

And here's a short photo gallery from this event. Just please remember, before you check it out, that these photos were done with my mobile and they're mostly horrible and don't do any justice to the miniatures:( Hopefully tomorrow I'll be able to link another gallery here, with decent photos done by my friend John (who won silver with his Wolf!)

Master of Imagination 'non-report'

I must admit, I'm not the best reporter and event photographer in the world:( I'm simply too busy experiencing the event, socialising with people and shopping/restraining myself from shopping, to take too many photos or to be to diligent when it comes to the quality of those I managed to take.
So... I don't really know what to say about the event itself, except I did enjoy myself  there;]
Thank you guys so much for your hard work preparing this competition. Good work!

It was really nice to meet all the fellow painters and chat about miniatures for a while. Pity that this occasions are so rare for me.

But at least there are some pictures (not necessarily mine)
Here you can find official photos of the winning miniatures, and all entered pieces:
MoI - The winners
MoI - Gallery

And here is all I managed to take in good enough quality (at least part of the mini is in focus;p)
MoI - my pics

I know, I need to practice more photography on location and with horrible lighting. But I hope you can see at least something here.
But on the other hand, while taking photos like that I'm not thinking about artistic quality, or composition. I just need miniature to be sharp and big enough so I can learn sometning by looking at uncompressed file. And most of the photos here meets my expectations;]

Pegasus Project - 'landscape after the battle'...

...and 3 days before the painting competition 'Masters of Imagination'...

There is really not much to say.
Mr Templar simply hates to fly, and as a form of protest he decided to break his sword, fall apart completely and lose some paint on top of that.

Because of the problems I had with the cloak and base (described few posts ago) I had no proper pins fixing him to the base. I'm guessing that's the main reason of the disaster. Normaly this kind of accident wouldn't be such a big deal, but away from my workbench, with only few basic paints, and without any pigments and special effects products it was quite a challenge to put him back together and prepare for a competition. And I'm really happy that I didn't give up, because he did very well, and now looks really nice in my Mum's cabinet (and the fact that sword is slightly bend is barely visible).

But I must say, I do hope that's the last accident of this sort that involve my miniatures.  I most definitely need to be more careful in the future.

Masters of Imagination 2012 results

Just a quick announcement:
My Templar Knight placed second (category 'Large model'), in the painting competition 'Masters of Imagination' which took place on 24th of November 2012 in Lublin, Poland.

Full list of winners can be seen here (for now in polish)

Beneath you can find a photo, as a proof that it really happened;p
The picture itself isn't very good (you know winters in Poland, lack of proper natural lighting is a pain, especially if you don't have a tripod with you:)), but should suffice as proof;]

I must say that I'm really happy with the result. Especially after all what happened to this miniature few weeks ago. Tomorrow I'll try to post photos I took 3 days before the competition, so you can judge by yourself how extremely brave and sesoned warrior Mr Templar is.

Euro Militaire 2012 - results

Well, not much to say really. This year I didn't even made a single cut.
I'm not gonna lie, I'm a bit dissapointed (everyone likes being appreciated), but on the other hand, to be perfectly honest with you... my works weren't the best there;p There is still lots for me to learn and practice, so I can only hope next year will be better.

But I didn't left Folkestone completely empty handed;]
I did proper shopping (list and photos soon) and had a chance to speak with few judges (big thanks guys for your patience:D), so I brought back really decent feedback:D
Thanks to that, Grinder and Templar are back on the workbench;] I'm not sure if I'll be able to make them winning pieces, but at least better looking ones:D

Almost there, still few little things need to be fixed, but I'd say I'm quite happy how he turned out. Especially after all stress and horror of yesterday;]

19 days and counting

I just realised, I got only 19 free days left before EuroMilitaire, and typically for me, non of my entries are ready. So I guess I have two choices now.
1. I can simply panic and wait to see what's gonna happen - the most probable scenario here is me with only one, max two entries and huge pile of remorse, or
2. I can implement strict regime too meet the deadline with as little stress and sleepless nights as possible.
The second option is more favourable of course, but to be honest I'm not a big fan of any type of regime, so I'm not really sure what's gonna happen.

But just in case I'll get my act together, I can do some math now;]
19 days can give me from 190 to 230 painting hours (depends on the level of dedication). Well let's say 200, to leave some time for other activities than painting and sleeping. In this time I have to finish 5 miniatures (4 entries and something I simply need to finish before euro) so it gives me 40 h per mini. And all of them are more or less advanced WIP, so it looks  like 40 h should be enough time to finish every single one. At least I think so:D Life may have different opinion on that subject.
And what do you think? Is 40h enough time to finish a bigger scale miniature, or am I simply kidding myself?

BMSS Nationals - London 28/04/2012

The day before yesterday I was at BMSS annual show in center of London.
British Model Soldier Society is a bunch of very friendly people with a common interest in historical miniatures, mostly soldiers.
But they were kind enough to let all the fantasy painters to take part in their competition in one of the non-military categories.
I was lucky enough to pick up two trophies: Silver for Andrea's miniature, Menhom Dark Shadow, and bronze for JMD's bust - Anton the Infected.

If you want to see more bigger pictures of the minis, here they are:

Hussar 2K!! :D

I guess everything was allready said about that event so I'm just gonna post here links to galleries and reports:
Official page
Official gallery  -  my Anton isn't that green in rl (as you can see below)
Official report
Maru's photos  - I'm that redhead btw;p
Slawol's photos 1 - award ceremony
Slawol's photos 2

From me I can only add that I had a lovely time and it was a real pleasure to meet all those people, I know from CofC, in flesh. Social side of the event (which is the most important to me) was trully awesome:)

And I was lucky enough to bring one of the beautiful golden Hussarettes home.
My Anton won gold in Large Model category, and I'm really proud of him:)

The second mini, Yrsa the Accursed wasn't  lucky enough to even get the first cut, but to be fair, she didn't really deserved it anyway.

And don't forget that next Hussar 2012 will be next October!! So make a note in you diary, and  reseve some time for that event already:)

It's been a long time:)

It's been a really long time since I posted anything here. But there is a good reason for that.

First I was on holiday in Poland (combined with Hussar 2K!!).
You know the drill while wisiting friends and family... not much time for internet activities (but plenty of time to be hangover);p

And then, after safe return home, I found out that my graphic cardwas boiling slowly for quite a long time, and I can see 'Things' on my screen that shouldn't be there.... So no processing pictures, not even using my computer for a longer period of time;/

But now everything is working again so I can post some news and photos:)
